wanna know something about me?

i really like being on my period.

and not just in a “i have an excuse to get out of things” type of way.

it’s one of my favorite times of the month. i just really, truly, love this week of my cycle.

here’s why:

  1. i feel deeply connected to my body and my soul

there’s an idea, and it rings true for me, that a woman’s intuition is stronger during her menstruation. her womb space is more open and she is better able to receive guidance from god/goddess/the universe/source. i notice that my daily meditations go deeper, my journaling goes longer, and i generally receive more spiritual messages over these few days. I’m typically in a space of deep creation, flow, and communion with Source.

  1. it’s a reminder to slow down

i don’t know about you, but i tend to be very go, go, go. ask anyone i work with - i’m always speed walking down the hallways with a notebook in hand and a to-do list in my brain - (sometimes i even forget to say hello before i launch into the action plan). i have a list of about a thousand things i want to work on, improve in, create, build, etc. i want to be everywhere, do everything, and be there for everyone - all at once. but my bleed is a time where i intentionally slow down and make more judicious decisions about how i’m spending my time and energy. it reminds that it’s okay, even good, to take breaks, cancel plans, and skip the damn workout every once in a while - without feeling guilty.

  1. it gives me space to think about what i need to shed & what is no longer serving me

during menstruation, we are literally shedding parts of our uterine lining, what we no longer need. if we kept letting it build, it would become unhealthy as our body holds on to tissue that no longer has purpose. this is a perfect metaphor for our own inner lives. we all hold on to things that no longer serve us, tissue that we need to shed to allow our next cycle to start anew. when i start my bleed, i take a few extra moments during my meditation to ask myself this question: what do i need to shed that is no longer serving me? it can be a relationship or relationship dynamic, a habit, thought, idea, feeling. usually something comes up when i sit with this question for long enough. not saying that i always actually shed that thing (letting go can be hard), but hey, at least i’m aware of it now

  1. bleeding while going about your week is fucking powerful

there’s something about walking around the grocery store or lifting at the gym or jumping on work calls that just hits different while bleeding. even though most people will have no idea (i love my moon, but not enough to walk around with a sign saying “hey i’m menstruating!”), i always just feel like a badass. people who don’t menstruate will never know that power. like, i’m literally shedding part of my internal organ and i’m still just going about my day like a normal human being.

  1. she’s kind to me when i’m kind to her

i want to preface this by saying that i (gratefully) have never experienced severe symptoms of PMS or menstrual pain. i’ve always had fairly regular cycles with mild symptoms, or at least none that would have me writhing on the bathroom floor for days, like i know some other people have experienced. but, i also have found that when i welcome her in, listen to her, rest, and allow her to share her wisdom - my cramps are lessened, my intuition is clearly, my fatigue is lessened, my headaches are mitigated, etc. when i try to push through my period, on the other hand, i usually feel worse for it. and i just think that’s pretty cool.

honestly? i could talk about menstruation for days. i could talk to you about free bleeding v. tampons v. pads v. a menstrual cup. i could talk about how to know when something is off with your period, how to talk to your provider about options other than hormonal birth control, all the factors that affect our cycle and our bleed. i could talk about the stigma surrounding menstruation and setting boundaries.

and at some point, i probably will talk about all of this.

but for now, just know - i really love my period. and i hope that you can befriend yours so that one day, you will find magic in its gifts too 🤍

i love you,

rachel

an invitation for you:

How can you connect more deeply to the gifts of menstruation? Where do you still feel shame, guilt, fear, and resistance around your bleed?

Weekly Journal Prompt

what am i ready to shed that is no longer serving me?

Take a few quiet minutes this week with your favorite beverage (no judgement, unless it's Pepsi).

Write without editing & listen to the wisdom that comes through.
