unspoken rules

my favorite part

of this little game we play

is the unspoken rules

that sometimes get broken

like

don’t ask when we’ll see each other again

only say “see you next time”

could be weeks

could be months

but we both know this story

isn’t over quite yet

and

don’t kiss in public

especially if there might be someone

one of us knows

but the second we get alone

pull me in and kiss me slow

and

don’t ask too many questions

sometimes i forget this one

usually you remind me

why we have this in the first place

“don’t worry about it”

is one of your favorite phrases

and

definitely don’t get attached

this rule is the hardest

for me to follow

how do you make it look so easy

while i just swallow

the words i want to say

and

remember it’s going to end

so appreciate the moments now

hold tight while we’re in bed

cherish the snuggles on the couch

the connection that we share

for however brief in time

and

most importantly

don’t fall in love

because you were never really mine
